Thomas Raney immigrated from Ireland to Sussex County, Virginia in 1740. One of his direct descendants, Thomas Howard Raney (1855- 1939), whose biographical sketch is enclosed, lived in North Carolina. Descendants lived in North Carolina, Tennessee and elsewhere.
