The Potomac or Patawomeck were an important tribe of the Powhatan confederacy. When Europeans arrived in Virginia, the Potomac lived along the southern bank of what is now the Potomac River in Stafford and King George Counties in Virginia.

Darby O'Sullivan emigrated from Ireland and settled in Westmoreland County, Virginia. He married Elizabeth Snowdall and they had at least one son, also named Darby. The elder Darby died in about 1699. Descendants and relatives lived mainly in Virginia.
