Nelson Higgins (1806-1890) was born to Daniel Higgins and Mary Dagget in Milford, Otsego County, New York. He married Sarah Blackman in 1826 in Huron County, Ohio, and they became converts to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1833. They moved to Hancock County, Illinois, then to Manti, Utah and then to Elsinore, Sevier County, Utah. He married two other wives in polygamy, and all three wives were sealed to him in 1856. The La Junta Sunday School was organized as a branch in 1951. In 1978, Rocky Ford and Las Animas branches organized from La Junta branch. La Junta and Rocky Ford branches joined as Rocky Ford branch in 1982 and in 1983, Las Animas Branch added to the Rocky Ford Branch. The Rocky Ford Ward was formed in 1984; in 1986, the name was changed to La Junta Ward.
