John Ball, a Quaker, was born in England and settled at Darby, Pennsylvania, in 1689. His son, Roger Ball (ca. 1672-1736) was born in Derbyshire, England, possibly at Darley. He married Mary Scothorne, in 1709 in Chester County, Pennsylvania. They had at least a son and three daughters, 1710-1715. James Ball (1754-1793) was born in Fauqier County, Virginia and married Nancy Smith (d. ca. 1822). They settled in Fauquier County and raised a family of ten children. By about 1840, four or five of the children settled in St. Louis, Missouri, another died in New Orleans and the rest remained in Virginia.
