James Sutton (1744-1824), a Quaker, was possibly an immigrant and possibly was born on Long Island, New York. His parents are unknown and he was apprenticed about 1756 to William Field, a Quaker merchant in New York City. James opened his own merchant store in 1768 at North Castle, New York and married Sarah Smith in 1769. Descendants and relatives lived in New York, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, California and elsewhere.
