Peter Claesen (1625-1694) emigrated in 1636/1637 from Amsterdam, Holland to Fort Orange, New Netherland, and worked on the van Rensselaer estate. He married Grietje van Ness, moved to New Amsterdam in 1649, and settled in what became Brooklyn, New York. He assumed the surname Wijckoff (i.e. Wyckoff) when the British took Descendants lived in New York, New Jersey, Ohio, and throughout the United States.
