Description
Periodical for the interchange of genealogical data and history of the Folsom (and variant spellings) families descending from John Foulsham and Mary Clark Gilman who emigrated from Hingham, England in 1638. John's surname was Anglicized to Folsom in America. John and Mary settled in Hingham, Massachusetts, where John was elected selectman (or magistrate). They moved to Exeter, New Hampshire, ca. 1647, where John worked with his Gilman relatives as a sawyer, a mast trader, and a land surveyor. Several Folsom families included members of the Choctaw and Chickasaw Indian tribes. One such family was Sophia Folsom (1773-1871), the daughter of Ebenezer Folsom and his Choctaw wife, Natika. Sophia married a Scotsman, Major John Pitchlynn (d. 1835), who was raised by the Choctaw Indians after the death of his father. In the 1600s, some Folsoms lived in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and New Jersey. In the 1700s, some moved to Connecticut, Maine, Michigan, Mississippi, New York, and Vermont. During the 1800s, some settled in Canada, the West Indies, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Minnesota, Missouri, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma (Indian Territory), Tennessee, Utah, and Washington. Later descendants also lived in Alberta, British Columbia, New Brunswick, and Ontario (Canada), England, France, Germany, Mexico, Puerto Rico, and in Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Kansas, Louisiana, Maryland, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Texas, Virginia, Washington D.C., Wisconsin, and elsewhere.
