Description
Newsletter for the interchange of genealogical data and history of the Stillwell (and variant spellings) families who came mainly from Bohemia, England, Germany, Holland, Ireland, Prussia, Scotland, and Wales. Some tradition is given about three brothers Nicholas, John, and Jasper. Their surname may have been Cook (Cooke or Coke), and tradition has it they fled to Holland due to persecution, and changed their surname to Stillwell. Other sources say the Stillwells originated in the 1500's, at the village of Meriden, in Surry County, about thirty miles south of London. Some immigrated to Connecticut, New Jersey, and New York in the 1600's. In the 1700's, some settled in Delaware, Indiana, Kentucky, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Vermont, and Virginia. During the 1800's, some moved to New Brunswick, Ontario, Quebec (Canada), and to Alabama, Arkansas, California, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, the Indian Territory, Iowa, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, the Missouri Territory, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, West Virginia, and Wisconsin. Later descendants also lived in Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Minnesota, Oregon, Utah, and elsewhere. Some had African American bloodlines. Information is transcribed from cemetery records, census records, court records, death records, deeds, land records, military records, probate records, wills, and other sources. More information is found on the web site.
