Description
Periodical for the interchange of genealogical data and history of the family of Thomas Sloan Mackay of County Down, Ireland. He was the son of John Mackay. Thomas (1819-1880) joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and served a mission on the Isle of Man, Scotland in 1840. There he met Ann Cowley Rodgers. They later married and had five children in England. In 1841, they immigrated to America, landed in New Orleans, Louisiana and settled in Nauvoo, Illinois. After the Latter-day Saints were expelled from Illinois, Thomas and Ann were among the first settlers in the Salt Lake Valley in 1847. They established their family in Salt Lake City, especially areas to the south and west, now known as Bennion, Granger, Holladay, Murray, Taylorsville, West Jordan, and West Valley City. Thomas had two other wives, one an immigrant from Wales and the other from England. In 1853, Charlotte James (1830-1911) became his wife, and had nine children born in Utah. Thomas married Sarah Franks in 1857, and had nine more children born in Utah. Some descendants moved to Bountiful, Gunnison, Odgen, Orem, Pleasant Grove, Salina, and other Utah cities. Others also lived in Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Michigan, Missouri, Nevada, North Dakota, Ohio, Oregon, Texas, Utah, Washington, and elsewhere.
Issuing Body
The Thomas Mackay Family Organization was founded 23 July 1910, at Wandamere Park, Salt Lake City, Utah. The occasion was the 100th anniversary of Thomas Mackay's birth. In 1963, their organization changed its name to Thomas Sloan Mackay Family Association. Annual family reunions are held in the general vacinity of Salt Lake City and Taylorsville on the second week of August.
