Description
Newsletter for the interchange of genealogical data and history of the Townsend (and variant spellings) families who came mainly from England, Ireland, Normandy, and possibly from Holland. Some focus is on (but not limited to) descendants of John, Henry, and Richard Townsend who settled in Long Island, New York ca. 1640. Other Townsends settled Massachusetts, New Amsterdam (New York), and Rhode Island in the early 1600s. In the 1700-1800s, some settled Alabama, Arkansas, California, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, and Vermont. Later descendants also lived in Nova Scotia and Ontario (Canada), Australia, New Zealand, Portugal, the United Kingdom, and in Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Washington, and elsewhere.

Issuing Body
The Townsend Society of America was organized in 1962, for the descendants of John, Henry, and Richard Townsend, early settlers of Long Island, New York. It was earlier known as the Townsend Society. The Society later expanded membership to include all Townsends in America. Headquarters are located at the restored, historic home of Samuel and Rebecca Purdy Townsend, in Oyster Bay, Long Island, New York. For membership and other information, see their Web site.
