Description
Lovelys Purchase region included what is today Washington and Crawford counties in Arkansas, as well as a large part of the present day northeastern Oklahoma, including all of Sequoyah, Adair and Cherokee counties and part of Muskogee, Delaware, Mayes and Wagoner counties. Lovely county was named after the Cherokee Indian agent William L. Lovely. In 1816 William Lovely had, without authorization, purchased several million acres from the native Osage Indians. In 1829, as part of the actions taken to abolish Lovely County, the Arkansas Territorial Legislature also abolished Miller County north of the Red River.
