Numbering Peculiarities
Whole number designations begin with vol. 2 no. 1 whole #20 (Apr 1913). "Vol. 1 has 19 issues; vol. 2 has 20 issues; vol. 3 has 15 issues; vol. 4 has 15 issues; and vol. 5 has 6 issues"--ed. vol. 6 no. 1. Some irregularities: Vol. 5 no. 6 whole #76 (Oct 1970) is followed by vol. 6 no. 1 whole #77 (fall 1980/winter 1981). Whole no. 19 was reserved for an index to vol. 1, and whole no. 39 was reserved for index to vol. 2. Neither index was ever published.
Description
Newsletter for the interchange of genealogical data and history of the More families who descend from John More (1745-1840) and Betty Taylor who married in Elgin, Scotland in 1770. They immigrated to America in 1772, and settled in New York, where they lived in Schoharie, in Harpersfield, in the Catskills, Roxbury, and ca. 1786 established the More settlement known as Moresville or Grand Gorge, in the Bearkill valley in the northeast corner of Delaware County, New York. Their eight children were named: John Taylor, Robert, Alexander Taylor, Jonas, Jean (their only daughter), James, David, and Edward Laraway More, whose families remained in the More settlement for generations. Some later migrated into Illinois, Michigan, Montana, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Virginia, Wisconsin, and into Canada. Later families also lived in Alabama, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Maine, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, North Carolina, Ohio, South Dakota, Tennessee, Utah, Vermont, Washington D.C., West Virginia, Washington state, Quebec, and elsehwere in the United States and Canada.
Description
The John More Association was founded by Charles Church More in 1890, and is a member of the Council of Scottish Clan Associations, Inc. The John More Association has many regional chapters and the Junior John More Association, all of which were incorporated in Roxbury, New York, in September 1937. In 1892, David Fellows More founded the periodical "The Historical journal of the More family," which is published by the John More Association, Inc.
