Description
Journal for the interchange of genealogical data and history of the Waldron (and variant spellings) families of Ireland and Wales. Most Waldrons originated from two distinct families. Norman ancestors came to West Ireland and settled in the Ballyhaunis area of eastern County Mayo. These were a branch of the MacCostellos clan of Cambro-Norman origin, who arrived in Connacht in the late 1200s. They were ancestors of the Costellos (Mac Goisdelbh), Jordans (Mac Siurtáin Dubh), Phillips (Mac Pilib), and the Waldrons (Mac Bhaildrín). Each clan dropped the 'Mac' prefix in the 17th Century. Other Waldrons came from Anglo-Saxon ancestors, who settled in County Cavan in the 1600s, and moved during the early 1700s into the districts of Carrick-on-Shannon and Drumsna which straddled the counties Roscommon and Leitrim. One branch of this land-owning family settled in north County Mayo in the late 1700s, and others established themselves throughout Ireland. During the 1800's, records of Waldrons were found in 18 Irish counties, and in Australia, Ontario (Canada), England, Germany, Scotland, and in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Dakota, and Virginia (United States of America). Later families also live in Alberta, Nova Scotia, and Saskatchewan (Canada), New Zealand, Ireland, Italy, Wales, and in Arizona, Arkansas, California, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Carolina, Oregon, South Carolina, Texas, Washington, Wisconsin, Wyoming, and elsewhere. Many were Catholic priests. Baptisms, births, biographical sketches, deaths, marriages, and other data were taken from cemetery inscriptions, census records, church records, deeds, immigration records, military records, naturalizations, newspapers, obituaries, vital records, and other published sources. Years covered are from the 11th Century to the present.
