The surname was changed to Sowash in Germany. One ancestor was Thomas le Sauvage who came with William the Conqueror from France into England ca. 1066. Immigrant ancestors first settled in Barbados, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Vermont and Virginia in the 1600's. In the 1700's, some also settled Maine, Maryland, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, North and South Carolina and Tennessee. During the 1800's, some families migrated into Quebec (Canada), and to Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, New Hampshire, Ohio, Oregon and Texas. Some focus is on (but not limited to) the ancestors and descendants of editor Jean Anne Savage Lichtenwald, daughter of Percival "Percy" Leslie Savage (1907-1987 and his wife Elizabeth "Betty" Penrod Wood of Saginaw, Michigan. Jean's ancestors came mainly from Denmark, Germany, Indiana, Ireland, Michigan, and New York. Descendants and relatives of these and other Savage progenitors also lived in New Brunswick and Ontario (Canada), England, Ireland, and in California, Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, Utah, Washington, Wyoming and elsewhere.
