Issues are designated by volume (vol. or v.), number (no.), whole issue (iss.), month, and year. Whole issue designations begin with vol. 2 no. 3 = iss. 7 (Sept 1954).
Numbering Peculiarities
Numbering errors: Vol. 28 nos. 2-4 = iss. 110-112 were misnumbered as vol. 27. In vol. 7 no. 4, pages 429-448 were erroneously numbered as pages 329-348. Correct page numbers to enable the corresponding index to work correctly.
Description
Newsletterfor the interchange of genealogical data and history of the Sparks (and variant spellings) families who came mainly from England, Germany, Ireland, Scotland, Sweden, Switzerland, and possibly Wales. The surname originally was known as Sparrowhawk. Some allied families came from Denmark, France, Germany, Holland, Ireland, Norway, Russia, Scotland, and Switzerland. Sparks ancestors settled in Barbados and Bermuda or Somers Island (West Indies), Maryland and Virginia during the 1600's. In the 1700's, some settled in Newfoundland and Nova Scotia (Canada), Connecticut, Georgia, Kentucky, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, and Vermont. During the 1800's, some moved to New Brunswick and Ontario (Canada), Brazil, China, Cuba, France, Italy, Mexico, Alabama, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa Indian Territory, Kansas, Louisiana, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, Ohio, Oklahoma Indian Territory, Oregon, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, and Wisconsin. Later descendants and relatives also lived in Alberta, British Columbia, and Saskatchewan (Canada), England, France, India, Ireland, Italy, Lithuania, Panama, Poland, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, Arizona, Florida, Hawaii, Idaho, Iowa, Maine, Michigan, Montana, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oregon, Utah, Washington D.C., West Virginia, Wyoming, and elsewhere. Some adoptions, and changed surnames are noted. Many Sparks ancestors died in military service and were buried overseas.
Issuing Body
The Sparks Family Association was founded in March 1953, by Dr. Paul E. Sparks, Dr. Russell E. Bidlack, and William P. Johnson. The Association ceased to function shortly after the death of Dr. Russell E. Bidlack. Additional information is still available on their web sites.
