John William Fulbright (John Wilheim Volprecht) was born near Berlin. As a refugee from religious persecution he fled into Holland, leaving Rotterdam on the ship, Robert and Alice, January 3, 1743, and landing in Pennsylvania where he and his father's family lived for some time before migrating to North Carolina.
