Thomas I. Studwell (ca. 1620-1669) emigrated possibly from Kent County, England and could have settled in Connecticut or in Virginia. A Thomas Stedwell/Stidwell is located in Virginia from 1633-1653. The author suggests that they could be the same person having relocated to Connecticut from Virginia. Thomas Studwell was living in Greenwich Connecticut by 1656. In April of 1663, Thomas I. Studwell bought land where the present town of Rye, New York is located. Thomas died in May of 1669 at Stamford, Connecticut. He was married to Elizabeth [?] and they were the parents of two sons: Joseph I. Stedwell, born about 1644 and who married Mary (Marie) Lyon; and John Studwell, born about 1655; and probably other children but these two sons are the only ones known. After the late 1700's, some descendants of Thomas I. went from the Greenwich, Connecticut and Rye, New York areas to Dutchess and Cayuga counties, New York. In the 1830's and later, some settled in Georgia, Iowa, Ohio and Wisconsin, while others joined the Latter-day Saints and moved to Utah. Later descendants moved to Colorado and California after 1900. Allied families include: Andreas, Ferris, Haviland, Kann, Mead and Tedrow.
