The volume for 1792-1794 was compiled by J.A. Readdie, P.R.G. Thirkell and G. Nicholson. The volumes for 1795-1797, 1798-1800, 1801-1803 were compiled by Philip R. G. Thirkell.
Description
The wills covered in these volumes were proved in the Consistory Court of the Bishop of Durham. "At this period the Diocese covered nearly all of the counties of Northumberland and Durham, the main exception being the area known as Hexhamshire... Also outside the jurisdiction of the Bishop of Durham was the parish of Thockrington... There were some areas outside Northumberland and Durham which came under the administration of the Bishop of Durham's Consistory Court, namely, Alston with Garrigill in Cumberland; Crayke in North Yorkshire, and the peculiar of Allertonshire which covered the parishes and chapelries of Birkby, Cowesby, Hutton Bonville, Leake, Nether Silton, North Otterington, Osmotherley, and Thornton-le-Street. The probate records realting to the Dean and Chapter of Durham's peculiar of Allerton and Allertonshire are also kept by Durham University Library Archives and Special Collections but are held and indexed separately from the main series and are therefore not included in this volume."--Introd.
