Description
Newsletter for the interchange of genealogical data and history of the Van Aken (and variant spellings) families who came mainly from Belgium, Germany, and Holland. Some allied families came from Ireland and Scotland. Focus is on (but not limited to) descendants of Marinus Van Auken and his second wife, Pietternelle de Pre who were married at Cadzand, Holland in 1683. They immigrated to America ca. 1684, and settled in Ulster County, New York (then known as Esopus). Other Van Akens include Metjen Kuerlings and her husband, Hendrik Jensen (Janson) Van Aaken who settled in Germantown, Pennsylvania before 1755; John Van Aken who settled Ohio and westward; Anton Van Aken who came to America in 1911 from Garnderen, Holland; John Van Aken who immigrated from Holland in the early 1870's; Peter L. Vanocker (b. 1769) and his wife, Charlotte (b. 1777) who settled Cattaraugus County, New York; and John Vannocker (born ca. 1770) and his wife, Dorothea "Dolly" Sullivan of Riga, Genesee County, New York. Van Akens settled mainly in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, and the Minisink area. In the 1700s, some settled in Connecticut, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. During the 1800s, some moved to Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Nebraska, North Carolina, Ohio, Vermont, Washington, and Wisconsin. Many later descendants remained in the tri-state areas. Others live in Belgium, China, Dominican Republic, Holland, and in Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Washington D.C., Wyoming, and elsewhere. Many wars with various American Indian tribes of the New Netherlands area are described.
