Newsletter for the interchange of genealogical data and history of the Macneil (and variant spellings) descendants of Nial Noigiallach, who ruled from Barra as High King of Ireland ca. 379-427 A.D. It is one of the oldest clans in Scotland. Clan MacNeil has ties to the island of Barra, tracing its lineage back to the O'Neils of Ulster who came to Barra from Ireland ca. 1000. There were also branches of MacNeils on the Inner Hebridean islands of Colonsay and Gigha, which have their own crest and tartan. The Gigha branch were established under Torquil MacNeil in 1427, but they now acknowledge the Barra Chief as their own. Some descendants immigrated to America, Australia, Canada, England, and Italy. Some of the American branches settled the Carolinas ca. 1735-1746 and in Prince Edward Island in 1775. Some later moved to Alberta, Nova Scotia, and Ontario, especially in Ottawa (Canada), and to Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Idaho, Kansas, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, and Virginia. Later descendants and relatives also lived in Australia, England, Ireland, New Zealand, Scotland, Wales, and elsewhere.

The Clan MacNeil Association of America was founded in 1921, and was formed in New York City in 1923. In 1972, the Association was reorganized at Grandfather Mountain, North Carolina. It has many regional branches, such as the Clan Macneil in Canada founded in 1975, the branch in New South Wales, Australia, and other branches throughout the United States. Membership includes MacNeills (by any spelling) and their septs throughtout Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, Scotland, the United States, and in other countries.
