Description
The Court of Arches was the court of appeal for civil cases of the consistory courts of the dioceses of the province of Canterbury. Until 1874, it included the province of York. . The Court of Arches dealt with four main types of cases: 1. Matrimonial: suits relating to clandestine marriages, validity of marriage contracts, or to nullify marriages . 2. Testamentary: the largest proportion of cases brought before the Court of Arches were disputed inheritances, administration of estates, etc. . 3. Parochial: cases involving disputes of church accounts, maintenance of church property, clergy . 4. Manners and morals: cases involving miscellaneous infractions of church discipline, proper behaviour of clergy and the lay members.

The microfiche series of the records of the Court of Arches contains: 1. Process books (D1-2371), 1660-1893 . 2. Nineteenth century case papers (H 1-996), 1800-1880 [these were not filmed entirely] . 3. Nineteenth century case papers (Hh 1-51), 1869-1913 . 4. Depositions in individual cases (Eee 1-81), 1664-1860 [the years 1822 to 1860 were filmed].
