Description
The Archiepiscopal registers are the official record of the archbishops' activities in the Diocese and show the changing role of the church over a period of four centuries. They include ecclesiastical, legal, social and financial business. Individual matters include the influx of money into the church, building places of worship, religious trials dispensations, appointments and granting of licenses. The series spans records from the beginnings of registration in the 13th century up to the abolition of the episcopacy in 1646. The Bishops' registers are the working records of the medieval prelates who had power over ecclesiastical and temporal affairs. They record benefices, royal writs and patronages. Priory registers include manorial and estate records.
