Notes
General Note
During World War II, an estimated 15,000 to 20,000 Chinese American men and women served in the Armed Forces. One in every five Chinese Americans in the total United States population during World War II served their country. More than 16 million Americans served in the United States Armed Forces. Unlike other minorities, Chinese Americans were not segregated in the military and made up only 0.2% of military personnel. About 70% served in the Army, and 24% in the Army Air Forces. The remaining 6% represented the Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, and Merchant Marine. Over 30% of the Chinese males were not naturalized prior to military service. From Pearly Harbor to V-J Day, Chinese Americans served in every theater of war. They are no longer silent, ignored or forgotten. These are their stories.
