Issuing Body
The Immigrant Genealogical Society was founded by Gerda Haffner and Elisabeth Sharp in North Hollywood, California around 1976. It began as an informal workshop for the study of German genealogy. The natural outgrowth of their efforts was creation of the Immigrant Library. In 1982, the Immigrant Genealogical Society was formally organized, with its primary goal to protect, utilize, and add to the sizable collection of genealogical reference books in the Immigrant Library's collection. In 1990, the Immigrant Genealogical Society moved their headquarters from North Hollywood to Burbank, California. Since the Society has access to many resources which are not readily available elsewhere, the Society helps American researchers find their German ancestors through the services of the German Genealogical Research Group (GGRG). Emphasis is placed on the German-speaking areas of Europe. Through the efforts of the German Genealogical Exchange Group (GGEG), the Society members in America helps researchers in Germany find their long lost relatives who immigrated to America. For more information, see their Web site.
