General Note
John Holden (1830-1907), son of John Holden, Esq. and grandson of Richard Holden of Pickens District in South Carolina, acquired land in western North Carolina beginning in 1846. He married Arminda Norton (1836-1908) in 1854 and they settled in Jackson County. She was the daughter of Roderick and Drucilla Burrell Norton and the granddaughter of Barak Norton, first white settler of Whiteside Cove. John and Arminda and fourteen children. Descendants and relatives lived predominately in North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee and Virginia. Includes Alley, Ash(e), Billingsley, Boone, Bray, Bumgarner, Burrell, Cowan, Cunningham, Daves, Ferguson, Frost, Hall, Keener, McCraken, McGuire, Moss, Nicholson, Norton, Shearer, Sherrill, Stillwell, Taylor, Tucker, Wall, Williams and related families.
