Description
Newsletter for the interchange of genealogical data and history of Luther (and variant spellings) families who came mainly from England, France, Germany, Holland, and Ireland. Some focus is on (but not limited to) Captain John Luther (ca. 1595-1645), a descendant of Hans Luder (b. 1459) of Möhra, Germany. Descendants of Hans Luder settled in Essex, England, then moved to Canford Magna, only 20 miles from the Isle of Wight. Captain John Luther left from there between 1630-1635 on the ship "Hopewell," to settle in the Massachusetts Bay Colony (Taunton). He married Elizabeth Turner in 1635, and had two sons. In the 1600s, two of Captain John Luther's grandchildren married two of the children of Roger and Joanna Shepardson Kennicutt. Other Luther family lines featured here are: the Randolph County Line (North Carolina) Luthers who came from Strasbourg, France and settled in Maryland in 1757; the descendants of Irishman David Luther, who landed at Philadelphia in 1794; and descendants of Ebenezer Luther and his wife, Aurilla (Wait or Walt) who lived in New York, Pennsylvania, and Illinois. Luthers lived in the Massachusetts towns of Swansea, Taunton, and Gloucester. During the 1800s, some moved to Alaska, California, Colorado, Michigan, New Hampshire, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Virginia. Later descendants also lived in British Columbia and Ontario (Canada), Germany, and in Florida, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Texas, Utah, Washington, Washington D.C., and elsewhere.
Issuing Body
The Luther Family Assocation was founded in 1936, by Leslie Leon Luther (1886-1976) and Reverend Clair Franklin Luther (1866-1938) at Swansea, Massachusetts. The Association was reorganized there in 1986. The Association has branches in the Western states, the Plains states, the Eastern states, and the Midwest states. Since its membership extends into Canada and elsewhere, it is also known as the National Luther Family Association. Its headquarters have been in Lakeland, Florida and Swansea, Massachusetts.
