Description
Newsletter for the interchange of genealogical data and history of the Bear (and variant spellings) families who mainly came from Alsace, Baden, Estonia, Germany, Hesse, and Switzerland. Many were of the Mennonite faith, and were Palatinate immigrants. Others came from Austria, Denmark, France, Ireland, and Wales. In the 1700's, some settled in Connecticut, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and Virginia. Some early ancestors were: John Baer, who emigrated from Switzerland before 1730; John Melchoir or Christophel (Stoffel) Baer who came on the ship "Phoenix" in 1743 to Philadelphia; Karl Ernst von Baer of Estonia; and four brothers, John, Jacob, Abraham, and Samuel Bare, who were born in Rockingham County, Virginia, and moved to Seneca County, Ohio ca. 1820. During the 1800's, some Bears settled in Alberta, New Brunswick, and Ontario (Canada), and in Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Ohio, Tennessee, Utah, Washington D.C., West Virginia, and Wisconsin. Later descendants also lived in Saskatchewan (Canada), and in Arizona, California, Florida, Idaho, Minnesota, Montana, Oregon, South Dakota, Texas, and elsewhere. Some may have Cherokee bloodlines.
