Description
The Darell family originally came to England with William the Conquerer and was granted lands in Yorkshire. In the early 1400s John Darell moved to Kent as servant to the Archbishop of Canterbury. He married the archbishop's niece and was granted a large estate. In 1410 he bought the manor of Calehill which remained in the family for 500 years.
Issuing Body
The Dorrill Society was earlier known as the Dorrill - Dorrell - Darrell File. It was founded by James Stewart Dorrill in July 1989. Its newsletter began in 1989, and was published by the same name, The Dorrill - Dorrell - Darrell File. In 1991, the name of the association was changed to the Dorrill - Dorrell - Darrell Society, and continued publication of its newsletter through 1994. Its membership spanned the United States and other countries overseas. The Society became dormant in 1994, but was reactivated in 2003. At that time, it became known as the Dorrill Society. Additional information and a family forum is found on their web site at http://www.dorrill.com/ (as of June 2004).
