Description
John Hoyt was born early in the seventeenth century and received grants of land in the first division of Salisbury, Mass. about 1640 making him one of the first settlers of the town. In 1647 he moved to the western part that eventually became Amesbury. He married twice, both times to a Frances and together they had 13 children. He died in Amesbury, 29 February 1687/8. Only sons, John and Thomas, lived to carry on the family name. Descendants settled in Connecticut, New York, Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Illinois, Michigan, Ohio, California and elsewhere.
Description
Simon Hoyt, the other founder of the Hoyt family in New England was born at Upway, Dorset, England, 20 January 1590, son of John and Ruth Hoyt, and there he married in December 1612, Deborah, daughter of Walter Stowers. In America he settled in Charlestown, Massachusetts. He was in Dorcester by 1630, Scituate by 1635, and Windsor, Connecticut by 1639. He received a grant of land at Fairfield, Connecticut in 1649 and lived there until shortly before his death in 1657. His second wife was Susanna Smith, who after his death married Robert Bates of Stamford, Connecticut. Descendants settled in Massachusetts, New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Maine, New Hampshire, Virginia, New Jersey, and elsewhere.
