Description
Family history and genealogy of Roy Lothrop Shurtleff (1887-1985), son of Samuel Matthew Shurtleff born in Hatley, Quebec, Canada, and his wife, Charlotte Louise Aseneth Avery born in Brecksville, Cuyahoga Co., Ohio. He was born in Nevada City, California. He married 1913 in Berkeley, California, Hazle Clifton Lawton (1890-1948), daughter of Frank Houghteling Lawton born in Clyde, Wayne Co., N.Y. and his wife, Francis Marion "Fannie" Rogers born in San Francisco, Calif. She was born in Berkeley, California. The earliest Shurtleff to arrive in America was William Shirtlef (1624-1666). He was born probably in England, perhaps in the parish of Ecclesfield. He was one of the first settlers of Plymouth, Mass. There he married in 1655 Elizabeth Lettice (b. 1636) born in England, a daughter of Thomas and Ann Lettice. William and Elizabeth had three sons, all born in Massachusetts. The Lawton immigrant ancestor of this family was, Thomas Lawton (1614-ca. 1681) of Cranfield, Bedfordshire, England. He was the son of George Lawton and Isabell Smith [Elva Lawton]. He came to America with his brother, George, ca. 1637. He married (1) 1635 at Cranfield Elizabeth Salsburie; (2) Mrs. Grace (Parsons) Bailey. He died at Portsmouth, R.I.
