Description
Newsletter for the interchange of genealogical data and history of the Ratcliff (and variant spellings) families. Some related persons came from Wales. Early Ratcliffs were Scottish nobility, such as Charles and James, Earl of Derwentwater. Many lived in the English counties of Berkshire, Lancashire, Sussex, Warwickshire, and York. Some escaped persecution and execution by fleeing to the Isle of Man, France, and America. Focus is on (but not limited to) descendants and relatives of Richard Ratcliff Sr., his wife, Alice Rawsthorne, and their children Agnes, William, James, Isabella, Alice, John, Elizabeth, Richard, and Susan. They left Lancashire in 1682 on the ship "Submission" and settled in Talbot County, Maryland. In the 1600's, some Ratcliffs immigrated to Connecticut, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. In the 1700's, some settled in Barbados (West Indies), and in New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia. During the 1800's, some moved to Canada, and to Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, the Indian Territory, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Ohio, Texas, Washington D.C., and Wisconsin. Later descendants also lived in New Zealand, and in Alaska, Arizona, California, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Oregon, Washington, Wyoming, and elsewhere. Some had Cherokee and Choctaw Indian bloodlines. Some belonged to the Protestant Episcopal Church. Some were Freemasons and Quakers. Names of servants and slaves are given. Births, marriages, deaths, and other information was extracted from family Bibles, cemetery inscriptions, census records, church records, deeds, inventories, land records, letters, military records, ship logs, probates, tax records, wills, and shared family histories. Dates are covered from the 1100's through 1900's.
