Description
Although the Church was organized in 1727, records survive from 1748. The church was located at Race and 4th St. until 1882 when there began a series of moves. In 1959, First Reformed moved back to the original site on Race and 4th St. and restored the church there. Several churches have been set up by the First Reformed members: in 1763 several followers of Rev. Rothenbuehler left the First Reformed Church and set up St. George's Reformed Church which only lasted until 1769; in 1806 some English-speaking members withdrew and formed the Second Reformed Association; in 1817 a German-speaking element withdrew and organized the German Reformed Church of the Northern Liberties. A merger occurred in 1935 between St. John's and First Reformed churches when both were in West Philadelphia (now part of Philadelphia).
