Notes

Description
The ancient noble family of de Rossignol was located in the old province of Rouergue, France, in the 1200s, and spread into other areas of France. Francois de Rossignol, his family, and other relatives, colonized on Saint Christophe (Saint Kitts) in the West Indies, ca. 1668. The plantations owned by the family were devastated by volcanoes and earthquakes in 1689. The island was captured by the English in 1690, and all the French were deported. Claude de Rossignal and his family, had to start again on the Isle of Saint Domingue (Haiti). They prospered there and built large plantations. From 1791 to 1803, there were a series of slave uprisings on Saint Domingue. A number of the members of the Rossignol family were killed, the survivors fled first to Jamaica and Cuba, and then made their way to Louisiana, Georgia, South Carolina, France and elsewhere. A few remained in Jamaica. Descendants listed, cheifly those who immigrated to Louisiana, lived in Louisiana and elsewhere. The branch of the family known as "Rossignol de la Chicotte" on St. Domingue used the "La Chicotte" or the "Lachicotte" surname in the United States.
