Description
Newsletter for the interchange of genealogical data and history of the Coward (and variant spellings) families who came mainly from England, Ireland, and Normandy. Others named Kawar originated in Syria, and Anglicized their names to Cowart as they immigrated to America. Early ancestors settled in Barbados, and in Georgia, Maryland, New Jersey, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia in the 1600-1700s. Some focus is on (but not limited to) descendants of Nathan Coward (b. 1818) who settled in Cullowhee, Jackson County, North Carolina. He married Jane Rogers (b. 1820), then after Jane's death, he married Sophia Hedden. Some Cowards immigrated first to Canada, then to the United States. Nathan's children were Clara Coward Smith, Tolvin Berry Coward, Jonathan David Coward, Mary Alice Coward Zachary, Oscar Bowman Coward, Sallie Jane Coward Norton, Robert Rogers Coward, John Homer Coward, and Frances Emeline Coward Glenn. Some married into the Clark Allen and Lewis J. Smith families. During the 1800s, some Cowards settled in Canada, and in Alabama, Arkansas, Kansas, Mississippi, Missouri, Tennessee, and Texas. Later descendants also live in Australia, Africa, and in Arizona, California, Florida, Hawaii, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Oklahoma, Oregon, Utah, Vermont, Washington, Wisconsin, and elsewhere. Some have African American bloodlines. Some have Cherokee, and other American Indian bloodlines. Information about births, deaths, marriages, and residence was transcribed or extracted from census records, correspondence, deeds, indenture records, published histories and genealogies, reunion reports, shared research, and other sources from the 1600s to the present.
