Numbering Peculiarities
Vol. 24 no. 2 (Oct 1996) / vol. 25 no. 1 (Apr 1997) was a double issue. Designation vol. 31 was assigned to issues in both years, 2003 and 2004.
Description
Newsletter for the interchange of genealogical data and history of the Wood families who came mainly from England. Samuel Wood (1737-1800), the son of William Wood and Mary Coleman of Leicestershsire, England. In 1755, Samuel and three of his brothers immigrated to Virginia. Samuel married Mary Robertson, who died after giving birth to their daughter, Mary Wood. Mary was raised by Grandfather Robertson in North Carolina, and later married James Hendricks. Samuel them married Sarah Reives (died 1839), daughter of Sarah Bean and James Reives. Samuel and Sarah moved from Virginia to Tennessee, and were members of the Cherokee Creek Baptist Church of Washington County, Tennessee. They later moved to Kentucky, and then Illinois. Their seven sons were William, James, Samuel Jr., Thomas, Abram or Abraham, John, and George Wood. Each family group is featured. During the 1800's, Wood families moved to Arkansas, California, Illinois, and Kentucky. Many lived in Bunker Hill, Illinois, and were buried in the Wood-Davis Cemetery. Later descendants also lived in England, and in Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Washington, Wyoming, and elsewhere. Data includes biographical sketches, birth records, cemetery records, church records, estate records, inventories, land and property records, marriage records, newspaper articles, obituaries, pensions, reunions, wills, and etc. Some slaves' names are mentioned. Years covered are 1700's-present.

The Samuel Wood Family Association was organized in 1973, and has headquarters in Bunker Hill, Illinois. Members of this Family Association also created the James D. Wood Community Service Fund to aid the Bunker Hill community.
