Robert Hamilton, son of Robert Hamilton, was born in 1812 in County Down, Ireland. He married Jane Carroll (1813-1902), daughter of James Carroll and Nancy Wallace, 29 July 1837 in Killinchy, County Down. They had eight children. Robert died in 1854. Jane and two of her children emigrated in 1872 and settled in Whitinsville, Massachusetts near two of her older children who had already emigrated.
