The earliest record of an identifiable ancestor of this family is found at Cockerham in 1598 of John, son of Henry Threlfall of Pilling. Benjamin A. Nones (1757-1826) emigrated from France to Philadelphia, and married Miriam Marks in 1782. Descendants lived in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, South Carolina and elsewhere. Some descendants immigrated to Venezuela.

Peter Thatcher Wales (1777-1824) married Lucinda Wales, and moved from Portsmouth, Rhode Island to Syracuse, New York. Descendants lived in New England, New York, New Jersey and the midwest.

John Clark (d.1712) settled before 1657 in Farmington, Connecticut, and was made a freeman in 1664.
