Thomas Applegate immigrated to Massachusetts Bay Colony in or before 1635. He went to Rhode Island, then to New Amsterdam (now New York City), and later to Flushing, L. I. He and his wife, Elizabeth had at least four children. Descendants lived in New Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Indiana, Colorado, Oregon and elsewhere.

He married Laura Hines Sharp in 1824 in Harrison County, Indiana. They had twelve children. The family moved to Meade County, Kentucky in about 1831. Joseph Franklin Herrick was born 6 May 1889 In Auburn, Indiana. His parents were Daniel Herrick (1861-1941) and Ida Spitler. He married Maude DeVille Fullmer 22 November 1910 in DeKalb County, Indiana. They had ten children. Joseph died 10 July 1956 in Baltimore, Maryland.
