The teacher, preacher, and Revolutionary War patriot Johann Gottfried Arends was born in Gottingen, Niedersachsen, on 11 December 1740 and died 9 July 1807 in Lincoln County, North Carolina. On 24 October 1776, he married Hannah Rutensell (Rudisill). He was the founder of the North Carolina Synod and served as its first president.. HIs diary covers the period 1775 until 1807; the annotations cover a wider time frame.

Johann Gottfried Arends was baptized 11 December 1740 in Gottingen, Germany. His parents were Georg Christoph Arends and Margarethe Catherine Busse. He immigrated to America in 1772. He married Sarah Hannah Rudisill (1758-1831), daughter of Johann Michael Rudisill and Eve Catherine Dellinger, 24 October 1776. He died 9 July 1807 in Lincoln County, North Carolina. Dirk Hemmes Sr. was born at or near Bunde, Germany, son of Dirk Hemmes and Engel Harms. Hinderika was born near Weener, Germany, daughter of Baye Loerts and Neetje Hinderks. Dirk and Hinderika were married in 1844 at Weener. They immigrated to America in 1868, settling in Stephenson County, Illinois. The family moved to South Dakota in 1881.

Herman Wilhelmus Cornelis Marie Vogels (b.1868) was the son of Willem Pieter and Catharina Geertruida Dantz of The Hague, Holland. He married Hendrika Johanna Eggink at Utrecht in 1895. She was the daughter of Gerrit Jan Eggink and Mina Arends of Utrecht. Herman emigrated to the United States in 1908 and sent for his family in 1910. They settled at Castle Hayne, North Carolina.
