Jared Maurice Arter (1850-1930) was born into slavery, in Jefferson County, West Virginia. His father was Jeremiah Arter and his mother was Hannah Frances Stephenson. He married Emily Carter in 1890 and they had five children. He married Maggie Wall in 1910.

The earliest known Janeway was John Janeway (1536-1619) who was a Vicar in the village of Manuden on the border of Essex and Hertfordshire. He married Johanna Paytwene and they were the parents of five children, including William Janeway (1575-1626) who married Joan Arter and was the father of five children. Their many descendants live in Great Britain and America.

The Oerthers were originally Swiss Moravians who migrated to Alsace-Lorraine. The Wilhelm Oerther family moved from Alsace-Lorraine to Britain and after a few years, in 1751, they immigrated to Pennsylvania. Their son, Michael (1732-1808) and his wife, Catherine Dillon (1737-1805) settled in Fountain Valley, Maryland, and used the surname "Arter". Descendants moved to the Midwest and the west coast.
