John Lebrecht Baer was born in Affoltern am Albis, Zuerich, Switzerland in 1838. He immigrated to St. Joseph, Missouri in 1860. In 1880 he returned to Switzerland as a missionary for the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. While there he met and married Esther Salzman Spillman of Maschwanden, Switzerland. They returned to Missouri in 1882. Descendants and relatives lived in Illinois, Iowa, Missouri, Utah and elsewhere.

Magdalena Hörner (1830- 1917) at Berndorf, Bavaeria, the daughter of Johann Matthäus Hörner (1793-1841). She immigrated to the United States in 1853 and settled at Baltimore.
