Edward Porteus Ball (1774-1840), son of Thomas Ball of Amelia, Spotsylvania, and Northumberland Counties, Virginia, married Janetter Davis (1794-1854) in 1809 in Northumberland County, Virginia. They migrated from Virginia to Campbell County, Kentucky, before 1820. Descendants lived in Kentucky and elsewhere.

There were several Ball families that settled in New York. One of the families was that of John Peter Ball (1699-1753) who was born in Germany and immigrated to America in 1709. He settled in Schoharie County and married Anna Margaretha Ballin. They became the parents of thirteen children. Augustas Oliver (1818-1887) was born in Georgia. In 1840 he married Elizabeth Emaline Hamrick and they were the parents of ten children. In about 1855 the family moved to Tallapoosa County, Alabama. Augustus served in the Confederate Army in the Civil War and was captured at Vicksburg. He then returned to farming in Alabama.
