"The first known Ewell to land in America was Henry Ewell from County Kent, England. He landed at Scituate (Massachusetts) in 1634, part of the Pilgrim group that formed the Plymouth Colony. Henry settled in the town of Scituate, there married Sarah Annable and fathered eleven children." Descendants of Henry Ewell and other branches of the Ewell family lived in New England, New York, North Carolina, Illinois, Utah, and elsewhere.

Edward Maurice Blackwell was born 18 September 1865 at "Farms View" in upper Fauquier County, Virginia to Moore Carter Blackwell and Sarah Alexander Foote Blackwell. In 1897 he married Mary Saunders Bowen (1872-1942), daughter of Andrew Jackson Bowen and Kane Kerfoot. A doctor by profession, he served in the Spanish American War 1898 where he was appointed Asst. Augustas Oliver (1818-1887) was born in Georgia. In 1840 he married Elizabeth Emaline Hamrick and they were the parents of ten children. In about 1855 the family moved to Tallapoosa County, Alabama. Augustus served in the Confederate Army in the Civil War and was captured at Vicksburg. He then returned to farming in Alabama.
