This tells of the Cox and Ballinger families of Missouri (formerly of Kentucky) after the Civil War, and includes descriptions of the death of the outlaw William T. Anderson and other plains army activities of the 1850s, and about the former Ballinger slaves, George and Diltz Ballinger, who went to Missouri with the family and were closely involved with them there.

John Ballinger was born in about 1750. He married Agnes (d. 1839) and they had nine children. He died in 1825. Descendants and relatives lived mainly in South Carolina and Georgia.

Ancestry is traced to Thomas Branson (1682-1743) who married Elizabeth Day in 1703 of Burlington, New Jersey. His son, Thomas, married Rebecca Borden ca. 1732. She was a descendant of Richard Borden (1595/6-1671) of Headcorn, England and Portsmouth, Rhode Island. They settled in Frederick County, Virginia. Both died in North Carolina. Descendants lived in North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and elsewhere.
