Barbour County was created by an act of the state legislature on 18 Dec. 1832, and was one of the political subdivisions carved out of the land ceded by the Creek Indians under the treaty of 1832. George Barbour (1615-1644) immigrated in 1635 from England to Boston, Massachusetts, and settled in Dedham, Massachusetts during or before 1640. Descendants used the surname of Barbour or Barber, and lived throughout the United States.

Thomas Barber (ca.1614-1662) immigrated in 1635 from England to Windsor, Connecticut. Descendants lived in New England, New York, Ohio and elsewhere. John Barber (ca.1714-1775/1777), direct descendant of George Barbour of Dedham and Medfield, married Lydia Stimpson and lived in Boston. Descendants lived in New England, New York, Virginia and elsewhere.

The McGinnis family originally of Ireland. James McGinnis, son of "Old" Edmund (Edward) and Sarah McGinnis, with his brother John and sister Nella, came from Ireland. James McGinnis and his wife Sarah Davis McGinnis, who were married ca. 1774 in Virginia, lived in Frederick Co., Virginia in the last half of 1700.
