James King was born 12 October 1752 in Londonderry, Ireland. He emigrated in about 1769 and settled in Virginia. He fought in the American Revolution. He married Sarah Goodson, daughter of Thomas Goodson, 15 October 1782. They had three children. They moved to Tennessee in about 1790. Sarah died in 1806. He married Margaret Richey 29 October 1807. He died in 1825. Descendants and relatives lived mainly in Virginia and Tennessee.
