Thomas Francis Bayard (1828-1898) was born at Wilmington, Delaware, the son of James Asheton Bayard and a descendant of Anna Bayard, a widow who immigrated to New Amsterdam with her family in 1647. He studied law under his father and took over his father's practice when he was elected to congress. He moved to Philadelphia ca. 1854.
