William Cawlfield (between 1760 and 1770-before 1840) was born in Ireland. Family traditions says he came to America as an Irish mercenary during the Revolutionary War. He deserted and after the war, settled at Roanoke, Virginia. He was the father of nine children, born 1790-1813.
