Three companies of volunteer cavalry were organized in Minnesota in 1861, and mustered into the Curtis Horse (regiment), later redesignated the 5th Iowa Cavalry. Daniel Hasty was born probably in Londonderry, Ireland. He and his family immigrated to America in the early eighteeth century. They settled in Portsmouth and Rye, New Hampshire from 1721 to 1732 and later moved to Scarborough, Maine. In 1721 his wife's name was stated to be Mary (no surname listed). Daniel died in 1756 in Scarborough. Traces some descendants through eight generations.

Simon Burr (1618-1692/3) was born at Stisted, England, the son of Henry and Ann Fisher Burr. He immigrated to America and settled first at Dorchester, Massachusetts. He and his first wife, Rose (d. 1644) had one daughter in 1639. They settled at Hingham, Massachusetts, after 1639. He and his second wife, Hester, were married in 1648. Christian Garver (Gerber) (Carver), born 1720 in Switzerland to Jacob Gerber. Christian had three wives. The names of the first two are unknown. His last wife was Elizabeth but her maiden name is not known. She was the mother of his last seven children. He had twenty children. Elizabeth was born in August, 1757 and died January 18, 1828. Christian died January 4, 1798 in Maryland.

Moses Wood (1747-1818) and his brothers, Aaron and Nathan, moved from Sharon, Connecticut to Berkshire, Massachusetts and then to Pompey Hill, New York in 1806. He married Sarah Phelps in 1767. Thaddeus Mead Wood (1773-1836), son of Aaron Wood, was born in Lennox, Massachusetts, and married Patty Danforth. They moved to Onondaga County, New York in 1794. John Micager Ananias Horn was born 13 March 1844 in South Carolina. His parents were James Horn and Rachel Cornwell. He married Rebecca Elizabeth Thorn Head, a widow with five children, in 1865.
