Joris Dircksen Brinckerhoff (ca.1604-1661) married Susanna Dubbels in 1628, and emigrated from Holland to Brooklyn, New York in 1640. Descendants (spelling the surname Brinkerhoff or Brinckerhoff) and relatives lived in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Iowa, Nebraska, Wisconsin and elsewhere.

James Brinkerhoff was born May 22, 1816 at Sempronius Township, Cayuga County, New York, to George and (?) Brinkerhoff. He married Sallie Ann Snyder, also of Sempronius Township, in 1836.
